The NCAA has changed March Madness, but not to what you believed would happen. Traditionally, it was a 65-team field, with the "64th" and "65th" teams playing a qualifier to determine the final #16 seed. Now the NCAA has advanced the field to 68 teams. Essentially, there will be a small eight team, four game playoff to determine the last four #16 seeds. The eight teams will include the final four "at-large" bids and the final four automatic bids.
These four games will be played on TruTV. NCAA has a television contract with CBS, Turner Sports, TBS, and TruTV, which is in their first year of a $10.8 billion, 14 year agreement.
There is no doubt this move was to create more games, thus bringing in more revenue. However, many people believed they would change to a 96-team field to accomplish that goal. That change is still in the horizon, but its only a matter of time before the sun shines upon it.
