PF's Weekly MLB Power Rankings

5/17/10

Team Rankings

1. Tampa Bay Rays (Last Week: 2) - The Rays are back on top as they continue to make a case that they are the best team in baseball.

2. New York Yankees (LW: 1) - It won't be a cruise control year for the Yankees as they continue to look up at the Rays in the AL East standings. Nick Swisher's injury has hurt their outfield a bit but Marcus Thames and Randy Winn have answered well in his absense.

3. Philadephia Phillies (LW: 4) - The Phillies are leading the NL East as they continue to dominate the weak division. 8-2 in their last 10 is great for any team, but its a luxury for the Phils.

4. Toronto Blue Jays (LW: 5) - The Blue Jays are hot. Their players are hot. They're coming off of a sweep. And they have won 7 out of their last 10. Everything about them makes them a #1 team...except for the fact that they are 3rd in the AL East (poor Blue Jays).

5. Cincinatti Reds (LW: Unranked) - Dusty Baker finally has something to cheer about! After an 8-2 record last week including a sweep of the Cards, the Reds are now leading the NL Central. Scott Rolen is also getting back to the great player he used to be.

Rouding out the top 10

6. Minnesota Twins (LW: 3)
7. Detroit Tigers (LW: Unranked)
8. San Francisco Giants (LW: 9)
9. San Diego Padres (LW: 7)
10. Texas Rangers

Honorable Mention

Los Angeles Dodgers -
Despite losing the Triple Crown leader Andre Either, the Dodgers have won 7 in a row and 9 out of their last 10. If the Rangers weren't leading their division, these Dodgers would easily be a top 10 team.

5/10/10

Team Rankings

1. New York Yankees (Last Week: 4) - The Yankees are the hottest team in the MLB right now winning 8 of their last 10 games. Robby Cano continues to stay on fire while Nick Swisher has taken advantage of the extra playing time, hitting 13 RBI's. Pitching has been great as well as 4 of their 5 starters have 4 wins. There are very few teams as good up and down as the Yanks.

2. Tampa Bay Rays (LW: 1) - The Rays fall down a spot simply because of the surge the Yanks have been on. They still lead the tough AL East and despite being "no reach base" against the A's on Sunday, they are still good enough to be #2. They may have found their future pitching star in Jeff Niemann, who has only allowed 6 runs in his last 4 outings (pitching 7 innings each time).

3. Minnesota Twins (LW: 7) - The Twins were hit hard without Joe Mauer, but their great pitching resulted in a series win and a sweep of two division rivals. Mauer is back and will play DH so expect the Twins to only get better.

4. Philadelphia Phillies (LW: 8) - The Phillies ended the Mets 8 game win streak and won all 3 series in their last 10 games. Jason Werth has exploded, hitting 4 HR and 9 RBI, and Roy Halladay has been...Roy Halladay. But the main story for the Phils has been 47 year old Jamie Moyer. He became the 2nd oldest player to pitch a complete game shutout, as he did against the Braves. How much longer will Moyer be good for?

5. Toronto Blue Jays (LW: Unranked) - The Jays shoot into the top 5 after winning 8 out of their last 10. They are 3rd in the AL East, but if they were in the AL West, they would be leading the division. Alex Gonzalez has been unbelievable, belting 10 leadoff homers this year. Come September, it would be sad to see the Jays miss the playoffs just because they are in the same division as the Yanks, Rays, and Sox.

Rouding out the top 10

6. St. Louis Cardinals (LW: 2)
7. San Diego Padres (LW: 5)
8. Texas Rangers (LW: 9)
9. San Francisco Giants (LW: 10)
10. Oakland A's (LW: Unranked)

Honorable Mention

Washington Nationals - The Nationals are only 1.5 games behind the NL East lead!!! (WHAT?!?!) They've done it with their pitching! (Double WHAT?!?!) Their set up man, Tyler Clippard, has 6 wins on the season, yes I said set up man. That ties for the league lead in wins with Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez. Their closer, Matt Capps, leads the league in saves with 13. Just how good will the Nationals be this year? Only time will tell.

5/3/10

Team Rankings

1. Tampa Bay Rays (Last Week: 1) - The Rays are still on top of the MLB with their 18-7 record. They've been doing it with their pitching, which was their flaw last year. All their starting pitches, with the exception of James Shields, have an ERA under 2.80.

2. St. Louis Cardinals (LW: 4) - The NL Central leading Cards jump 3 spots as they have been on a tear, winning 7 of their last 10 games. Their rookie pitcher, Jamie Garcia, has a minute 1.04 ERA in 26 IP. Their bats have been on fire as well. Their new 3B David Freese has hit 3 HR and driven in 11 RBI in his last 7 games.

3. New York Mets (LW: 7) - The Mets make the biggest jump in the rankings this week with their 8 game win streak that ended on Saturday. They are only a half a game back from leading the division.

4. New York Yankees (LW: 3) - The Yanks have fallen a bit this week with a mediocre 5-5 in their last 10, but Robinson Cano continues to light up the scoreboard with his 4 HR last week.

5. San Diego Padres (LW: 5) - The Padres continue to surprise all baseball fans out there with their division leading 16-9 record. I mentioned Garcia's minute ERA earlier. Check out Wade LeBlanc's 0.52 ERA in 2 starts! Once these guys get their ace Chris Young back, they will be even stronger.

Rounding out the Top 10

6. Detroit Tigers (LW: 10)
7. Minnesota Twins (LW: 2)
8. Philadelphia Phillies (LW: Unranked)
9. Texas Rangers (LW: Unranked)
10. San Francisco Giants (LW: Unranked)

Honorable Mention

Chicago Cubs - Is Lou fighting for his job? The answer is most likely yes, but as of now, it looks like hes keeping it. Despite placing their ace Carlos Zambrano as the 8th inning set up guy, the Cubs starting pitching has been superb. Their new 1-2-3 pitchers combine for a 7-1 record with a 3.0 average ERA.

I agree with all of this except that the A's should be ahead of the Padres.

The big reason why I put the Padres over the A's is cause of their impressive 8 game winning streak they had up until Sunday.

Well the good news is, it looks like the AL. East will have a great battle in the end with the Yankees and the Rays. The reason I'm not including the Red Sox is because they started out 4-9 and a team that has gone 4-9 to start out a season has never won the League in the A.L. East.

I wouldn't have put the Mets in the Top 5 after losing 2 horrible games to the Phillies, sure they were a team that had a decent streak but the last days changed my slight views on them.

Then why aren't they #2, kind of defeats the purpose.

Because they are better than the Cards as of right now. But they are in no way as good as the Rays or else they would be leading the division

I thought I would never see the day the Reds made it to the top 5.
