This debate has been swirling over the heads of college football fans for years and now it's time we talk about it. Is it time to insert a playoff (probably 8 teams) into college football? I say yes... college basketball has something like this and it's one of the greatest sports events of the year. Having a playoff would draw more fans, and decide who the REAL number one is... not by a computer.
definetly. although the bcs does make for more suspensful and exciting regular season games. i think they should take the winners of the 6 major bcs conferences, and 2 teams from the non-bcs conferences. I know there will be controversy with this system too because there might be a team that didnt win there conference that might be better than a non-bcs team in the playoff. heres a format of what it might be like: 1. Oklahoma (12-1) 2. Florida (12-1) 3. USC (11-1) 4. Penn State (11-1) 5. Cincinatti (11-2) 6. Virginia Tech (9-4) 7. Utah (12-0) 8. Boise State (11-1)
So the first round would be: Oklahoma vs. Boise State/ Florida vs. Utah/ Virginia Tech vs. USC/ Penn state vs. Cincinatti/ and so on
frankly i think it would be easier just taking the top 8 teams. I don't think winning your conference should get you an automatic bid. if 3 teams come from the big 12 and none from the ACC... then so be it.
not necessarily... winning your conference would make a strong case for you getting in the top 8. im just saying it shouldn't be automatic because an 11-3 confrence winning team could beat out a 13-1 non confrence winning team.
They should just do what Division 1-AA(or whatever the hell it is now), Division II, and Division III does. Which is they take the top 8 teams at the end of the year, then they have a playoff. The big reason why they haven't switched to a playoff system yet is because of the bowl games and the sponsorships. Because what are they gonna do without the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl???
And the regular season is a joke right now. If you lose your second game of the year, then go undefeated the rest of the year, you're better off than a team who goes undefeated most of the year, then loses it's tenth game. Not only do changes need to be made for the post-season of college football, but they need to be made for the regular season as well.
And by the way, the BCS Conferences is biggest load of crap ever. Utah beat like 6 BCS teams this year, but they're conference isn't BCS, so they don't matter as much. Then they kicked Alamba's ass up and down the field, and finally people started to recognize them.

I Like the BCS but it does need to go. I think you need to make sure the teams who go undefeated have a chance and i think 3 Big 12 teams deserve to make it there with one loss over a 4 loss ACC or Big East team. Now What you do iss take say the top 12 teams and have a few round playoff.

ya i agree exactly with steve but the only thing is the san diego bowl you were talking about... those have lower teams in them anyway so they really wouldn't be affected.
no no no.. what i was saying, is that college football relies so much on bowls for sponsorships.. I just used the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl as an example of how the sponsorships are getting a little out of hand..

in the system i proposed, maybe other than the 8 teams in the playoff, the remaining teams can go into bowls with the same system. for example, the rose bowl would be ohio state/oregon state and the orange bowl would be boston colllege/pitt based on this years standings. so u have a combination of the 2 playoff systems. u have a playoff which decides a true champion and the bowls would be there fo sponsorships and whatnot
My problem with a playoff system is what about the Non BCS schools?? They deserve just as any other BCS school to make the playoffs and in all honesty they probaly won't.

I thought their plan was to use smaller bowl games for playoffs then have the BCS bowl games for the Semis and then the Championship game for the champions.

ON ESPN the anchor said for First Take that the plan was, if they ever got a plaoff system was to have the quarterfinals in bowl games that weren't that big, semis for the BCS Bowl Games and then the National Championship.
