Can you name the top 25

Well I'd like to have a little fun with this list, so I'd like to see if anyone can successfully put the top 25 in order.

I'm not sure yet what the winner will get, but it will probably be me doing a biography of anyone who is not in the top 100.  You can name guys in the 101-125 list, or an honorable mention seeing as how I didn't go into much detail.

There will be two winners.  The first will be who can successfully name every player in the top 25.

The second will be who puts them in the order that is closest.

The rules are very simple.

+1 if you get the rank right on the dot
-1 for every position you are off on.

The contest starts now, and will end once player number 25 is named.

I'm not sure when that will be but you should now my pace by now, so you will have at least three days.

Also I may name somebody in the 35-26 position who you may have in the top 25, so holding off may not be a bad idea.

I'll give two hints for my top 10.

There was a time when 5 of the players in the top 10 were active at the same time.

There was also another time when a separate group of 4 of the players in the top 10 were active at the same time.

There's also one player who I have in the top 5 that I would be shocked if people got correct, seeing as how this person wasn't named to the all-century team, nor did he even get close, and yes this person has been retired more then 10 years, and started his career after 1900.

If you really know the game of baseball though you should be able to figure out why I would have him in the top 5.

You also only get one guess, so make it count.  If I see that you edited your post, you will automatically be disqualified regardless if you actually made changes.

Also feel free to post your own top 25.

You'll need to do some research as while the players in the 26-50 range are mostly modern players as you are beginning to see, the top 25 range has players coming from all over the place.

I'll announce the winner when number 25 is announced.

I'll even give you a hint about number 25.  They spent their entire career with the Detroit Tigers.

But so did the person I have at number 27.

Good luck.

Also if people would like, I'd being willing to send who I have in the top 25 to an independent moderator just to make sure I haven't altered it to prevent somebody from winning, so if you would like to volunteer for that spot either respond here, or PM me.

Yes one post, one guess.

Like I said before it will be at least three days until I name the person who's at 25.

There's no secrets with who's in the top 25 either.  If you think there's a great player who hasn't been named yet, he's probably still to come.

Change that to 5 in the top ten were active at the same time.  That was my fault for not explaining it better.

Same goes for the other group of four.

Example:

Brooks Robinson, Ron Santo, Rusty Staub, Tony Perez, and Al Oliver were all active at the same time in the late 60's-early 70's.

That's what I mean.  Only replace those five with the five players in the top ten that I'm referring to.

Also if there's a tie, the person who got it in first will be the winner, either for naming every player in the top 25, or for naming the list.

I will also take no points off for naming a person on the list who is in the top 25, but if somebody else can correctly name all 25 players, the person who named all 25 players will have the higher score, regardless of what his score is.

Example:

If somebody puts Derek Jeter in the top 25, but scores a -5 as a score he will finish behind a person who names all 25 players but scores a -20.  (scoring here isn't like golf, the higher the score the better)

Also trust me, you will need to do research to name the top 25.

Obviously there are players who haven't been named yet that should be blatantly obvious they are in the top 25, but I can think of at least 5 players that I don't think would immediately come to most peoples minds when naming the greatest players of all-time that are in my top 25.

Once again though there aren't any secrets, so if you find yourself slaving over your computer for more then half an hour, your probably doing something wrong.  It should be pretty obvious looking at certain players statistics to determine if they are in fact top 100 position players that weren't named yet.

You aren't going to find somebody like Lefty O'Doul in the top 25.  (for those wondering Lefty O'Doul has the 4th highest batting average in history, but only has 3264 at bats.)

You should also be able to figure out what I look for in players when evaluating them by now after seeing where I have certain players ranked already.

There's no negro league players on the list.  No Japanese pro players, and nobody who started their career before 1885.

I know the rules may seem a bit confusing, and there may be alot to swallow for some, so don't be afraid to ask any questions you may have.

Again best of luck to everybody.

Thank you, that clears it up a lot.

Can you tell us how many of the top 25 are in the Hall of Fame?

I will say this, every player who is in the top 25 is either in the Hall of Fame, or isn't eligible for induction.

I also may do another honorable mention, because I can find at least one player who I could see people putting in the top 25 that isn't even in the top 100.

Just be on the look for Smokey Joe Wood Syndrome.  (Players who had great but brief careers.)

Number 25 will be named sometime Monday after 6PM, therefore I'm setting the deadline for this at 6PM Monday.

Number 29 will be up later tonight, and the remaining three players will be posted tomorrow before we got to number 25.

I'm not sure if I will announce every player in the top 25, and then unveil their rankings as the countdown continues, or just keep it how I was doing it, so any feedback would be appreciated.

Just so people know in case I don't get their biographies up by tonight, 27 is Charlie Gehringer and 26 is Al Simmons.

Both probably will be up by tonight, but I just want to give people more time.

So there, you have every player listed but the top 25.  You have a little less then 23 hours.

The only other person who knows the top 25 is bestever.

Good luck.

Again if you have any questions feel free to contact me, and I will answer them as best as I can.

As of right now I have no guesses so it looks like nobody is going to win.
