Top 100 fights list

Depending on the amount of interest and judging by Pmoe baseball list. I am considering doing a MMA list featuring the top 100 fights of all time. This list would feature UFC, WEC and Pride bouts and would be done over the course of the summer in honour of the UFC reaching the magical 100 mark next weekend.

I'll give it a week for input. (I'm looking at you CO, JP as you seem to be the only ones commenting on my posts)

Would you guys like to see something of that nature?
Any fights that stick out to you?
Is this one list too many here at MESN?

I myself didn't really start becoming interested in UFC until about a year and a half ago, so I would really be lost when it came to developing a list on this topic.

I mean I really don't have many suggestions for you as far as fights go outside the obvious which I'm sure will be in there if it's a top 100, so I'll just give a a couple of technical suggestions from some of the things I learned when doing my top 100 list.

1. Above all else develop a criteria you will stick too.  This was pretty easy for me to do considering I based it almost completely on stats, but I had to make guesses in a lot of instances when it came to how good of a fielder some old time players were.

Obviously you won't have that, and this list will be based entirely on your arbitrary opinion, but try as best you can not to get emotionally involved with any of the fights or fighters, and set a very good criteria from the outset of what you look for in a great fight, and stick with it.

2. This is more for your sake then other people but watch the length of the posts.  It doesen't look like it but those top 100 posts can range anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours for me to do, depending on how much info there is on the person.  If you're willing to make some sacrifice for time over quality, I'd sit a personal limit for how long your posts should be.

There isn't as much history involved with MMA as there is baseball, so I doubt this will be as big of a problem for you, but don't be afraid to talk about things outside of the fight that still relate to the fight if in fact you are doing this to educate people on the history of MMA, as was my goal with baseball.

3. Most importantly have fun.  I personally learned alot about the game of baseball by doing this, and found myself looking into players careers that I had never really heard of.  Of course people are going to disagree with it, and everyone is going to have their own list, but your primary goal shouldn't be to please anyone but yourself with these rankings.  I you like what your talking about, and feel like it's very well written and educational, I guarantee you other people will like it if they in fact want to learn more about MMA, even if they don't necessarily agree with all the rankings.

If you would like to know more info about the process I went through to create my list, feel free to PM me, I can give you some detail, although again considering your list will be almost entirely arbitrary while mine was based mostly on stats which you won't have I'm not sure how much use it will actually be, but I'll try to help you out as best as I can.

Things like historical impact I really didn't take into consideration (notice Jackie Robinson is nowhere to be found), and felt I could do so and get away with it, but I'm not sure you will have the same option as I did.

Mine took about three months of research to do, and considering I don't know much about MMA, I have no idea how long yours will take, or how much research if any you have already done, but I wish you the best of luck.

Pmoe - Thanks for the advice!

To give you a knowledge of my MMA expertise. I've been watching MMA live for 4 or 5 years but have seen the early UFC on video as well and I own roughly half of the UFC and Pride libraries on DVD so i've been watching them through again (for research purposes of course lol) and writing down my favourites.

I look for fights that are exciting, not necessarily fast paced, but techinical in nature. I often feel some fights (eg battles for ground position) crowds don't understand and I end up enjoying. That being said I enjoy the standard battle of will as much as the next fan.

I have no doubt this will be a huge undertaking and I thank you for your imput! I just have one question how do you embed videos?

There's a button second to the right when you post that has a film icon on it.  Clicking on that will give you the link to which to post videos.

One of my regrets doing my top 100 list has been the lack of videos regarding alot of these players (even modern ones) and I feel it really does add to the overall quality of a post I do, so I hope you have more success here then I did.

For those wondering the number one reason why I don't post more videos is lack of availability.

That's what I worry about because the bigger promotions have a habit of taking them down.

That's why I wondered if MESN members wanted to see BballCoach and my own opinions or if everyone wanted me to forget about it I would and I still will if that is the case...

Bestever...

If you were going to do this, Maybe do your Top 25 fights or something like that. 100 Fights is a bunch. All IMO.

I'm still debating as the UFC just did the ultimate 100 and i'm not sure it would be worth it...

Totally agreed. If you have a good compilation of fights, maybe you could do the 10 best non-UFC fights you have ever seen. Or something like that.
