Sean Miller staying at Xavier

John Calipari decided to leave. Sean Miller reportedly decided to stay.

Xavier's Miller met with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood on Sunday about the Wildcats' open head coaching job but rejected the school's offer later that night, according to multiple media reports.

Xavier AD Mike Bobinski told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that he expected to speak with Miller late Sunday or early Monday. He wrote in a text message: "Nothing firm at this moment, but I remain very optimistic that Sean Miller will continue as our head basketball coach at Xavier."

A statement from the school could come on Monday.

Calipari, a good friend of Miller's, told ESPN.com that Miller was struggling with the same decision he had just battled before leaving Memphis for Kentucky.

Miller "has a potential Final Four team coming back next season, loves where he lives, has security and is paid well and has the best job in his league, yet has to decide whether or not this is the right job for him to explore," Calipari said earlier Sunday.

While Calipari accepted the challenge of a big-name program, Miller reportedly opted to remain with a program that he has taken to four NCAA tournaments in his five years.

Miller's decision comes on the heels of Southern California coach Tim Floyd also meeting with Livengood and deciding to stay at USC.

This si a good move by Sean Miller. He's staying at a university that has a chance to win and do well next seaosn unlike Arizona. Arizona is a great basketball school yes but they need something more and they need a coach who will be willing to take a couple of losing season and rebuild this program to the greatness that they used to be at.

Not that shocked honestly.

Xavier is probably the best job in the country you can get for a team that's not in a major conference, but Arizona is, and is a very dominant team in a major conference.

I think the NCAA really needs to take a look at how their sports are structured, because it's virtually impossible for any team to move up through the ranks to become an elite team.

Pmoerhin I beg to differ it is Gonzaga or a team like Memphis. That stinks for Xavier but they always seem to bounce back and get another good coach and keep winning.

uab and tulsa arent good teams, they just benefit from playing in a crappy conference. kind of like memphis, but not nearly to that extent

I think that Memphis could accutlay have some success in another conference if they were moved to another more "powerhouse" conference

They could dominate in the Pac 10 or like the SEC if they moved in the ACC I don't see that happening or maybe the Big East they would be murderd by the competition in that league.

If they moved to the big east or the ACC they'd prolly end up finishing sixth or seventh because both of those are very strong conferences and i think we can all say those are the two best conferences.

That's three teams out of how many small conference schools?

You look at college basketball before the mid-80's and the conferences teams were coming out of to reach the Final Four were all over the place.

Now once in a while you'll get someone out of the Big 6 into the Final Four, but nearly every time a program from a non power conference has a good year, the team(s) coaches leave for bigger schools and more money.

To put it in another way if I ran the NCAA things would look very different, but that gets into my whole theory surrounding college sports at least on the Division 1 level which I would not like to get into.

Bottomline is NCAA Basketball needs more parody. IF some of these small schools like Gonzaga is one big man away from being National Championship contender
