Yankees, Pettitte nearing 1 year deal

The New York Yankees and Andy Pettitte are close on a deal that will bring the veteran left-hander back for a year, Major League Baseball sources told Buster Olney on Monday.

The deal, sources told Olney, could be done as soon as Monday afternoon. It would pay Pettitte nearly $6 million, with incentives that could make it worth as much as $12 million.

Pettitte was 14-14 for the Yankees last season with a 4.54 ERA. He started 33 games. Pitching with a sore shoulder, he was 2-7 with a 6.23 ERA in his final 11 starts and missed his last turn of the season.

It was his second season back in New York after three seasons with the Houston Astros.

Pettitte began his career with the Yankees, pitching his first nine big league seasons in pinstripes. After last season, indications were that Pettitte and the Yankees wanted to make a deal, but were unable to come to terms on a dollar figure -- until talks heated up this weekend.

Pettitte earned $16 million last season.

If he signs, Pettitte would join a projected starting rotation featuring CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain.

Thank you this is an awesome starting lineup for the Yankees. Now the Yankees can put Phil Hughes out of the rotation and into the bullpen where he belongs. Phil Hughes doesn't have the best stamina so the bullpen is good for him.

Do the Yankees have the best rotation in Baseball right now? If not, who does and are the Yankees a top 5 rotation in the Major Leagues.

I think you almost have to say that on paper the Yankees have one of the best rotations in baseball. With them I would throw in the Cubs, who have probly the best rotation in the National league from top to bottom. I heard that if they do get Peavy, he would be the 5th starter. That kinda shows u how good the rotation is. Then I'd have to throw in the D-Backs, the signing of John Garland was a really good pick-up for them.

i think the red sox have the best rotation. you have josh beckett, jon lester an emerging superstar, dice-k, tim wakefield, then when u add brad penny, and john smoltz, thats a pretty tough rotation

I still think that the Red Sox have the best rotation with Jon Lester and Josh Beckett, but the Yankees are a very close second.

Ok, I guess I'm gonna have to state the case for the Cubs. Let us take a look at the rotation and each guys ERA from last season.

1. Carlos Zambrano- 3.91
2. Ryan Dempster- 2.96
3. Rich Harden- 2.07(2.34 w/ A's, 1.77 w/ Cubs)
4. Ted Lilly- 4.09
5. Sean Marshall*- 3.86

That seems like a pretty decent rotation if you ask me.

*- Projected 5th Starter.

You're right steve and the cubs will probably win... 100 games this season. And like eeeeevery other season it will mean nothing. I see the cubs like the dallas cowboys in a way, all this talent, great regular seasons, nothing to show for it. I would rather have a rotation like boston's that have proven winners on it over good statistical players any day.

Yea man, you really have no place to talk there. But thank you for conceding the Central.

What do you mean i have "no place" to talk there. Yes it was somewhat bias but it doesn't make it false. If you had a choice between proven winners and statistical players i'm not the only one that would take the winners. Yes the cubs have a good rotation but wasn't this the same rotation they had last year?? And you guys can have the central... it's not going to mean anything... it hasn't for 100 years.

Well ok, yes, its true, and I've even joked about how the Cubs are gonna win the central easily, then lose to the padres in the playoffs. And yes it's the same rotation as last year minus Jason Marquis, but the Cubs pitchers weren't really the problem in the playoffs. The problem was that we had too many right handed bats in the line-up against good righty pitchers.
